"I’m convinced that this book sets itself apart in that its not only a case study of different leaders but it’s literally a manual with suggestions, a link to the Human Leader Index, which I took by the way, and opportunities for the reader to adopt a higher level of these skills. I’d suggest that it starts with the mindset one adopts as you read this book and that its best to be focused what behaviors did the different leaders demonstrate, what am I currently doing which is aligned, and where are my gaps that need attention? To those skeptics of human leadership, when something isn’t getting done, a directive isn’t being followed, etc., there are only two reasons – Ignorance or Apathy. The team either doesn’t know or they don’t care. Now then, the leader with the technical, command and control, hard skills can train and build capacity but it’s only by inspiring the team that they will deliver the business imperative. It’s a bit of saying to the skeptic, “Let’s try it your way first and assess the results, and then let’s try it my way. The results will almost always speak for themselves.” As for the assessment, I’m always impressed with how accurately they capture my personal strengths and weaknesses. My strengths were mattering, appreciating, and inspiring. My weaknesses were seeing and hearing and to bit of a lesser degree, understanding. Nash notes examples of Alan Mullaly forging the posh executive lunch room by enjoying lunch with the rank and file. As I read the chapter on “seeing” I got that little pit in my stomach that is your tell that this one is hitting a little too close to home and the results of the HLI survey certainly aligned with that. For anyone on the fence, pick this one up - you'll be glad you did."
